Understanding NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient)

The Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) measures how well a material absorbs sound. It’s rated on a scale from 0 to 1, where 0 means no absorption and all sound is reflected, and 1 means total absorption.

For example, a smooth concrete wall has an NRC of 0.0, reflecting nearly all sound and creating echoes. In contrast, an open window has an NRC of 1.0, as sound passes through without reflecting back into the room.
