10 Most Overlooked Surfaces that Need Cleaning in Your Business

The current coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the importance of good hygiene in our daily lives as well as in our workplaces.Maintaining clean workspaces has always been important, but will be even more vital as we continue to fight COVID-19 over the coming months. In an effort to help you maintain a safe and hygienic environment for your employees and clients, we’ve compiled a list of the 10 most overlooked surfaces that need cleaning in your business.

Many of these items only need to be cleaned monthly, quarterly, or annually, but if they aren’t already on your cleaning schedule it’s a great time to add them. Consider scheduling out any professional cleanings or maintenance in advance to ensure they’re not missed.

1. Computers and Wiring

When was the last time you wiped down your computer keyboard? Computer keyboards, mice, and screens (especially touch screens) collect dust and germs quickly, and can be high-risk areas for spreading illness. Wipe them down often (preferably daily) with an appropriate disinfecting cleaner.

Bundles of computer wiring also collect dust, which harbors dust mites and germs. Regularly wipe down wires with a damp cloth and vacuum beneath them.

2. Behind Copy Machines & Printers

How often do you move your copier or printer out from the wall? In most offices, the answer would be rarely - there could be months or years of dust collected behind them! As some of the most-used items in the office, these machines can generate a lot of paper particles, which accumulate behind and under them. Make sure to wipe down the machines and their wires and vacuum behind and beneath them.

3. Carpets and Upholstery

Carpets and upholstery collect pollen, dust mites, odors, and bacteria. Have them professionally deep-cleaned once or twice a year to keep them clean and looking their best. Vacuum regularly between and beneath cushions on couches and chairs as well, as these areas quickly accumulate dirt, dust, wrappers, and other items. Wipe down office chair legs and wheels also, as dirt from our shoes rubs off on them and wheels gather hair and fibers as they roll.

4. Ceiling Tiles

The rough texture of ceiling tiles causes them to accumulate dust. They can also absorb moisture, leading to mold or mildew growth. Wipe down and inspect them regularly, and replace as needed.

5. Light Fixtures

Since we don’t look up very often at work, light fixtures can be easily forgotten. Light fixtures collect dust, dirt and dead bugs, causing dim lighting. Remove fixtures and clean them regularly to improve lighting.

6. Air Vents and Ceiling Fans

Dust accumulates on the visible parts of air vents as well as inside ductwork, and air moving through ducts carries dust throughout your workspace. Wipe down vent covers often and have your HVAC system professionally maintained at least every couple of years. Aside from keeping the air clean, maintaining your HVAC system can also reduce energy costs.

Ceiling fan blades also collect dust, even when they are in motion. Because the tops of the blades aren’t visible, they can be easy to overlook. Wipe them down regularly with a damp microfiber cloth to remove dust buildup.

7. Walls & Baseboards

Whether walls are textured or smooth, they can accumulate dust and dirt. If you wipe them down regularly, not only will they stay clean, but you may find that you don’t need to paint as often! Don’t forget to check behind open doors and other out-of-sight or low-traffic areas.

Baseboards also gather dust, especially in corners. This buildup can become sticky over time, making it even harder to remove. Wipe them down with a damp cloth to prevent sticky buildup.

8. Picture Frames

Picture frames gather dust and fingerprints, making them prime spots for germs to collect and diminishing the beauty that pictures are designed to provide. Wipe them down often, paying special attention to the top, underside, and corners of the frames.

9. Light Switches and Door Knobs

These high-traffic touchpoints collect germs and grime from dirty hands and should be sanitized often - make sure they are a part of your daily or weekly cleaning routine.

10. Window Blinds

Window blinds gather dust and dirt and can become grimy over time. If you let them go too long, they could require more intensive cleaning or replacement, so be sure to wipe blinds down often.

Educate Your Employees on Hygiene

In addition to keeping up on regular cleaning, make sure you and your employees are following these hygiene practices:

  • Wash hands thoroughly and often.
  • Wipe down desks, work areas and break room surfaces daily using a disinfectant cleaner.
  • Report and clean up spills or leaks right away.
  • Use appropriate (preferably commercial) cleaning products. Consult your cleaning service if you’re unsure which ones to use.
