If a room sounds echoey, harsh, or tiring to work in, acoustic treatment is likely the answer. Hard surfaces — plasterboard, glass, concrete, timber, ceilings — reflect sound back into the room. Those reflections build up as echo and reverberation, making speech harder to follow and spaces more fatiguing to be in.

Acoustic treatment adds sound-absorbing material to reduce those reflections. The result is clearer speech, lower background noise, and a calmer environment — without structural changes.

These are often confused but they solve different problems:

• Soundproofing blocks sound from passing between rooms — through walls, floors, ceilings, and doors

Wall panels and tiles attach directly to walls. They treat the most common source of echo — horizontal reflections off hard wall surfaces. Available in multiple shapes and colours, they also work as a design feature.

Ceiling baffles hang from the ceiling and are ideal when wall space is limited, or when sound is bouncing primarily between the floor and ceiling. Common in open-plan offices and classrooms with high ceilings.

Freestanding and desktop products require no installation and can be repositioned easily. Useful for flexible workspaces, temporary arrangements, or spaces where wall mounting isn't an option.

It depends on your available wall space, ceiling access, and whether you need a permanent or flexible solution. As a general guide:

• Meeting rooms — wall panels at seated head height usually deliver the best result
• Open-plan offices — a combination of wall panels and ceiling baffles, or freestanding dividers between workstations
• Classrooms — wall panels across multiple surfaces at standing or seated head height
• Home offices — wall panels or a freestanding panel behind the screen, depending on the space
• Healthcare waiting areas — wall panels on multiple surfaces to reduce background noise and improve speech privacy

Using a combination means you can distribute treatment across the room more evenly, which generally outperforms concentrating everything in one location.

For large or technically complex commercial projects, an acoustic engineer can be valuable. For most offices, schools, meeting rooms, home offices, and studios — no, you don't need one.

For most Versare products, yes. Wall panels and tiles use standard fixings — adhesive strips, construction adhesive, panel pins, or mechanical fixings depending on your wall type. Freestanding products require no installation at all.
